Opening and viewing 3D pictures

CMSoft Stereoscopic Picture Editor and Converter was designed to be easy to use and its basic functionalities are meant to work with any OpenGL-compatible system.

1. Opening files

To open a stereoscopic file (.MPO, .JPS or a .JPG with the two images embedded in a single file), click File -> Open, choose the file and click OK.

If you have the left and right stereo pictures, use menu File -> Import left/right. Then, open left eye picture and, after that, the right eye picture.

The forward and backward arrows open the next and previous picture in the folder, respectively.

2. Viewing and manipulating the pictures (image screen)

The menu items in the picture screen are as follows:

From left to right:

– Basic options (top): open picture, open previous picture, open next picture, save image, show more options and auto-parallax.

– All options (bottom): open picture, open previous picture, open next picture, save image, show more options, auto-parallax, fullscreen mode, switch wiggle and crossed-eyes modes, crop image and apply custom filter.
The image is displayed using OpenGL in the animated mode called “wiggle”. In this screen the picture can be manipulated with the mouse:

– Click and drag to pan;
– Use mouse scroll to zoom in and out;
– Click and use mouse scroll to control image separation (parallax).
The parallax adjustment is used to match and focus corresponding objects in the two images of the stereoscopic picture. The auto-parallax button attempts to correctly focus the objects in the center of the image being displayed. If the auto-parallax attempt is successful the button background turns green. If no good match is found the button’s background turns red.

3. Saving

The image can be saved in .JPS format. To save the image click the save button.

If the picture was cropped or filtered the saved file will correspond to the cropped region and the filtered result will be saved. (Check advanced options below).

4. Advanced options

4.1 Full screen viewing

In order to view the pictures without displaying other screen elements of the software, double-click the picture or click Fullscreen.

To exit full screen mode double-click the image or press Escape (esc).

4.2 Crossed-eyes viewing

It is possible to render the images for crossed-eye viewing. Crossed eyes is a stereoscopic technique that involves observing the image to the right with the left eye and vice-versa. If you want more information about the subject I suggest you use Google to look for “crossed eyes tutorial”.

4.3 Cropping

To crop an image, simply zoom to the desired area, adjust the parallax (as described in 2. Viewing and manipulating pictures) and click the Crop button.

The image now only contains data of the chosen region.

When zoom is applied to the image both views are zoomed accordingly so as not to loose the crossed eyes pair for visualization.

4.4 Filtering

If you have a OpenCL compatible GPU and the corresponding OpenCL drivers installed, you can develop and apply custom filters to the image. The first time the user clicks the button, filters are loaded from the application folder and compiled.
